I am a geek about the brain. My teaching style is highly cognitive in approach and heavily influenced by behavioral psychology and neuroscience-based study. I coach to train musical ability, but also to develop natural discipline, self-sufficiency, and sustainability in a student’s journey. This takes hard work, collaboration, and careful attention on the part of myself, the student, and parents. This process may seem slow at the beginning (a few years even), but the learning compounds exponentially when a firm musical foundation has been established.

My average student begins music study between 3- 10 years of age. Many students end up taking combined lessons between instruments, songwriting, the voice and various genres. Everyone takes some kind of piano, unless they are coming to me with a piano background already (it is the “latin” of music). I do accept teen and adult students on a case by case basis. We learn a combination of songs (hopefully in a style they enjoy), solid music fundamentals, practice and performance techniques, as well as developmental life skills. I design the curriculum for each student to be tailored to his or her overall goals (and if there are no goals, we find them eventually!). I pull from many training methods including classical (Kodaly & Suzuki), by ear popular music styles and science based vocal techniques.

In addition to developing sustainable technique, a large part of our lessons include developing a practicing routine outside of lessons to support the larger picture of what a student is trying to accomplish. Students generally begin with about 4 practicing days per week at about 20-30 minutes and work toward more within the course of study over time. The practicing game is a long-term project.

Some take to it right away, others, it can take years to get into a steady routine depending on their other interests and activities. It is important before beginning music study to assess whether or not the student truly has enough time to be doing this (practice included). Even if they don’t, it doesn’t mean he or she shouldn’t still try to learn, it’s just important to set expectations that are realistic to the effort being put in.

My music teaching services are concierge style (in the home of the student) or online (for students not in the Nashville or Brentwood, TN areas).
